ANCIENT LIVERPOOL

Liverpool is depicted as a city dominated by the sails of windmills and tallships, as it was a great port of trade and manufacturer of textiles. The impressive solidarity of the buildings, both public and private, bear witness to the wealth generated by this industry and trade.
In William Gawin Herdman's time (1805-1882) as a Liverpudlian art master, most of the edifices and places illustrated in this series of original lithographs had ceased to exist. The views are largely constructed from early sketches and paintings as well as from written records.This tri-tint lithographic style is particularly pleasing for architectural scenes. One almost feels able to reach out and touch Herdman's masonry.
