First Prime Minister (1901-1903)
Commentary by VANITY FAIR:

in the first Cabinet of te Australian Commonwealth, he was born at Glebe, Sydnet=y three and fifty years ago....He was caled to the Sydney Bar, whencehe has steadily
pursued the life of a Politician, successfullly representing the Legislative Assembly Sydney University, Wellington, East Sydney, New South Wales.
He was also the Attorney General of NSW, Member and Leader of the Federal Convention, Leader of the NSW Opposition, an much else.
Now he is at the top of the Australian Political Tree and it is not much to say that he has officially visited England for King Edward's Coronation without loss of Prestige.
For he is quite and able man who can look exceedingly wise ; and he has a natural if rather rugged dignity that is all his own.
He is also a man of moderate views who is better able than many Colonials to understand the British Character..."
In the History of VANITY FAIR Magazine many a top hat devotee has been depicted amongst the caricature chromolithograph Vanity of the week ...
